Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy

HTN in pregnancy

National high blood pressure education program working group(2000) describes 5 major categories-

  • Gestational hypertension:- (BP>140/90 mmHg for the first time, after 20 weeks, without proteinuria)
  • Pre Eclampsia:- GHTN with proteinuria
  • Eclampsia:- Pre-eclampsia complicated with convulsions or coma
  • Chronic HTN:- Known HTN before pregnancy or diagnosed first time before 20weeks
  • CHTN superimposed pre-eclampsia or eclampsia:- Occurrence of new-onset of proteinuria in women with chronic HTN

Hypertension is the common medical complications of pregnancy & contributes to maternal & perinatal morbidity & mortality
